SPECIAL TO THE COMMERCIAL
Jacob Midyett continued his season-long scoring binge with two short rushing touchdowns, as Parkers Chapel continued their perfect start by grinding out a 28-0 win over Drew Central in a 7-3A contest on Friday night.
“It’s great to be 6-0 and 3-0 in conference,” Parkers Chapel coach Mark King said. “It was a bad night weather-wise, but our kids played hard and battled through it. Good things are happening because of their hard work.”
The Trojans hurt themselves by losing a fumble that stopped a drive into Drew Central (1-5, 0-3) territory early in the first period, but the defense came right back with a huge play, as Clint Neely intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards for the first points of the game.
However, the extra point was no good, and the Trojans (6-0, 3-0) took their 6-0 lead into the second period. Midway through the second quarter, Midyett scored the first of his two touchdowns with a 5-yard jaunt, and the senior quarterback ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0 at halftime.
Parkers Chapel pulled away late in the third period, as Zach Abbott scored on a 4-yard run, and the junior booted the extra point to give the Trojans a 21-0 edge heading into the fourth quarter.
With six minutes left in the game, the Trojans embarked on a drive that ended any hopes of a comeback by the Pirates, as Midyett capped a time-consuming drive with a 2-yard run. Abbott drilled the extra point to end the scoring in the contest.
Midyett’s two scores on the evening give him 11 combined touchdowns with eight coming on the ground through the season’s first six weeks.
Parkers Chapel’s defense racked up their second shutout in the last three weeks by forcing several turnovers.
“Our defense played a great game,” King said. “It’s always someone stepping up every week.”
Parkers Chapel’s ground game continued to roll up yards despite the very sloppy field conditions with Midyett and Randy Taylor leading the charge, and with powerhouse Prescott set to visit next week, King knows his team will have to be ready.
“(It’s) going to be exciting,” King said. “They are the best team we’ve faced, and there is no bones about that. We need to bring our ‘A’ game, or they can embarrass you, but our kids are playing with a swagger. I’m expecting a good football game.”
Drew Central will host Gurdon next week in a matchup of teams that have a combined one win on the season.
